Aidan woke up this morning a happy boy, just like any other day. But, by the time 12noon rolled around, his skin felt like it was on fire. He was slightly cranky (but nothing extremely out of the ordinary) and he refused to eat or drink.
I took his temperature, and, sure enough, his temp was 104 degrees. I called the doctor's office and they said that I should give him either Tylenol or Motrin and have him drink lots of fluids. They said that most kids don't want to eat when they have a fever so I shouldn't worry about him not eating. Well, being a first-timer at this "sick kid" stuff, I asked if we could bring him in just to have him checked out. He's never had such a high fever before.
So this afternoon, we brought him in to see Dr. Davis. His regular doctor, Dr. Holmes had, ironically, gone home for the day because he wasn't feeling well either. After a thorough check-up, Dr. Davis determined that Aidan had a viral infection. At first, he thought he might have pneumonia, but Aidan's lungs were, in Dr. Davis's words, "clear as a whistle." Thank God. We were sent home with instructions to give him either Tylenol or Motrin every four to six hours until the fever subsides and try to get him to drink as much water, juice, or formula as we can get into him.
Tonight, right before I put him to bed, his fever had gone down - all the way down to 99.6 degrees, which makes me feel so much better. Before, it was like his skin was literally on fire - all over his body. And every time I touched him, it was as if it hurt because he grimaced at every touch. That's so unlike my sweet, loving baby boy!
Hopefully tomorrow morning will bring back the sweet natured, laughing, happy baby boy I've come to love so much. Without a fever!
