Just four short years ago, Aidan's paternal grandmother, Grandma Ramos, received one of the most important phone calls of her life... she was to receive a much needed donor kidney for a kidney transplant. Prior to her transplant, she was on dialysis three times a week as her own kidneys were not functioning due to Kidney Disease.
Since receiving the transplant, she has been in excellent health, able to do things she hadn't been able to do in quite some time. Such as travelling, she and Aidan's grandfather have been able to travel a lot these past four years and I know how much they've enjoyed it.
This past thursday, Grandma Ramos went to the lab to have routine blood work drawn. This blood work checks on her kidney function among other things. It determines if her body has begun to reject the transplanted kidney. Well, she received the news that her body was, indeed, beginning to reject the transplanted kidney and she was given a steroid injection, which her doctors hoped would combat the rejection. She was then instructed to go home, rest, and have another set of blood work drawn the next day.
Friday morning, she had her blood work drawn, and Friday afternoon, she was admitted to the hospital because her blood work indicated rejection of the kidney. The blood work, which should go down actually went up even more so, which is not a good thing. She has been receiving heavy doses of steroids since that afternoon and her levels are continuing to rise, which is not a good sign. She received her last dose of steroids this evening and we will find out some time tomorrow if this last dose worked. If it didn't... well, that means her body is, indeed, rejecting the kidney and she will have to go back on dialysis.
Obviously, this is devastating news for our whole family and we would ask, if you pray, to please pray for Aidan's Grandma Ramos. Not only is this whole process frustrating and scary for her, it is also physically and emotionally draining. We pray that she has the emotional strength to keep pushing, keep fighting, and never give up hope that miracles can and will happen.
