I’ve been hugely impressed with the way Alex has embraced fatherhood. I always knew he would be great at it, but he’s gone beyond my expectations. He carries our big diaper bag without flinching. He insists on wearing Aidan (in the Bjorn) or pushing his stroller when we go out because he wants everyone to know Aidan is his son. He is a big, goofy roll-on-the-ground and show-my-son-how-to-crawl mush ball when it comes to him. One little grin and he’s a puddle on the floor. A singing silly songs puddle, but a puddle nonetheless.
I always knew he would do a great job of playing with Aidan, supporting him, keeping him safe, but it didn’t occur to me that he would also put his own interests on hold, pursue his hobbies in ways which he can involve Aidan. I didn’t think about how he would share his passions with him, teach him about the things he loves and enjoys, challenge and engage him. It’s been exciting for me to see this new side of my husband, exciting to see that he and Aidan have bonded in so many ways, exciting to see how much they love each other. I’m learning that one of the best parts of life is when the people you love adore each other.
